Transfăgărășan
Cârțișoara, Romania → Curtea de Argeș
90 km · Jul – Sep · Challenging
Ceaușescu’s mountain road, now a ribbon of asphalt over the Făgăraș. Tunnels, a dam, and a pass that feels higher than the number.
Viewpoints
Bâlea Lac
The lake at the top. The road is the view.

Vidraru Dam
The southern approach, a wall of concrete over the Argeș.

- Road
- Good tarmac when open. Fog and sheep. The Bâlea tunnel is wet and unlit in patches. Closed most of the winter.
- Permits
- Seasonal closure typically November to June. Check the Transfăgărășan opening before you go.
Tips
- 01
It is a summer road
July and August are the window. Outside that, assume closed.
- 02
Fog eats the pass
If you cannot see the next hairpin, wait. The drop is real.

Bâlea Lac in a hole of blue. The south wall was empty at eight. In June we hit the barrier and turned around — this is a July–September road, nothing else.

Fog in the tunnel, sheep on the asphalt, Vidraru appearing like a concrete cliff. Ceaușescu built it for tanks. It still feels like one.
