The famous stack. Count them on the way down.

Road
Narrow, well surfaced, often wet in the morning. Cyclists and coaches share the same hairpins. Snow can linger into June.

Tips

  • 01

    Go early

Coaches fill the pass after ten. The light is better before that anyway.

  • 02

    Check the opening

The pass is seasonal. A closed Stelvio is a long detour.

The north face is the reason. Forty-eight numbered bends, a coach forcing a reverse on hairpin 31, and still the cleanest high road I have driven in Italy. Go before the coaches.

From Bormio the climb is shade and meltwater. At the pass the wind took the door. Prato is a different country. June was still snow on the outer edge.
