Twenty-seven hairpins down a wall into Lysefjord. A closed-in-winter county road that exists because a hydro plant needed one. The view is an accident of engineering.

- Narrow, steep, one lane with bays. Opens mid-May, closes with the snow. The last kilometres to Lysebotn are the postcard. Buses and campervans in July.

- Seasonal opening. Check Rogaland fylkeskommune. The road is free when it is open.

Down, not up, first
The fjord is the reward. Climbing it after is a different drive.

It is shut in winter
There is no clever way around the snow gate. Lysebotn in January is a ferry.

Down from Øygardstøl. Twenty-seven, if you count. A bus in a bay, then Lysebotn and the wall behind you. Open only because it was June.

The snow gate was still shut in May. Came back in August. Climbing it is a different road. Do the descent first.
