- Seasonal, narrow at the top, excellent tarmac. Cyclists in numbers. Snow walls into July. The old tunnel is closed; you go over.

Over, not through
The tunnel is shut. That is the point. The last kilometres are the steep ones.

Assume closed outside June to September. A barrier here is a long day.

Lautaret at nine, the col at ten, still snow on the north wall. Cyclists in a line like a pilgrimage. Valloire by eleven. The tunnel is closed. Good.

Went up from Valloire. Steeper than the Lautaret side. The monument was in cloud for twenty minutes, then the whole Dauphiné. A summer col — we had tried in May and met a gate.
