Dirt switchbacks up the Drakensberg escarpment into Lesotho. A border post at the bottom, another at the top, and a pub at 2,874 m that has earned the joke.

The lodge and the highest pub. Look back down the wall you just climbed.

Tips

  • 01

    4×4 or do not

This is not a stubborn-car road. The border staff have seen the attempts.

  • 02

    Start in Himeville

Border open, climb cool, pub at the top. Mokhotlong is further than it looks.

Himeville border at eight. Low range on the dirt. Sani Top by ten, the pub as advertised. Looked back down the wall. A 2WD would have been a story with the wrong ending.

Ice on the top switchbacks in April. Waited an hour. Mokhotlong is further than the postcard. Passport, 4×4, and a turnaround time — the border does not stay open for you.
