Tizi n’Tichka

Marrakech, MoroccoOuarzazate

196 km · Mar – May, Sep – Nov · Moderate

The N9 over the High Atlas. Olive to rock to kasbah, a pass at 2,260 m, then the road to Ouarzazate and a different climate. Morocco’s mountain gate.

Viewpoints

  • Tizi n’Tichka summit

2,260 m. The High Atlas stacked both ways.

  • Telouet

A short detour to the Glaoui kasbah. Dust and a palace.

    1,800 m

  • Aït Benhaddou

Off the N9 near the end. The ksours. Worth the spur.

Road
Mostly good tarmac, slow trucks, occasional rockfall. Snow closes it in winter storms. Summer heat on the south side is a different problem.

Tips

  • 01

    Not July at noon

The south face is a furnace. Spring or autumn, early start.

  • 02

    Telouet or Benhaddou

Pick one spur. Both, and Ouarzazate becomes a night arrival.

Left Marrakech at 6:30. The pass in a lorry convoy. Telouet was dust and a palace. Ouarzazate by two, a different climate. Not July. Not noon.

Aït Benhaddou at four, the ksours in side light. Skipped Telouet — one spur is enough. The N9 is the gate; the kasbahs are the reason to get off it.
