Hana Highway

Kahului, MauiHana

103 km · Jan – Dec · Moderate

Six hundred bends through rainforest to a town at the end of the road. Waterfalls, one-lane bridges, and a Pacific you only glimpse.

Viewpoints

  • Keʻanae peninsula

Lava and taro and the first long sea view.

    55 km

    12 m

  • Wailua Valley lookout

The coast stacked in ridges. A pull-off, not a hike.

    78 km

    400 m

Road
Narrow, wet, well known. One-lane bridges are yield-to-the-oncoming. Do not rush it; the ticket is for people who try.
Permits
Some waterfall pools and trails now need reservations. The highway itself does not.

Tips

  • 01

    Leave at six

The road is the destination. Hana at noon with a convoy is not.

  • 02

    Go on past Hana

ʻOheʻo Gulch is another half hour. That is still the highway.

Left Kahului at 5:50. Keʻanae empty. One-lane bridges are a conversation, not a race — yield and wave. Hana by nine, which is the whole point.

Went past Hana to ʻOheʻo. The highway does not end at the town. People who turn around at the first parking lot miss the quieter half.
