Blue Ridge Parkway

Rockfish Gap, VirginiaCherokee, North Carolina

755 km · Apr – Jun, Oct · Easy

Four hundred and sixty-nine miles of designed overlook. No trucks, a speed limit that is the point, and a ridge that does not hurry. America’s longest scenic road, on purpose.

Viewpoints

  • Mabry Mill

The mill pond. Go early or you will photograph other people photographing it.

    284 km

    870 m

  • Linn Cove Viaduct

The road around Grandfather Mountain, not through it. Walk the trail under it.

    488 km

    1,250 m

  • Waterrock Knob

Near the southern end. A bald, a wind, a long look.

    726 km

    1,918 m

Road
Two-lane, well kept, closed in sections after ice and after slides. Fog on the balds. Autumn is traffic. The Parkway is not a shortcut — commercial vehicles are banned.
Permits
National Park Service. Some campgrounds and the visitor centres take a fee. The road itself does not.

Tips

  • 01

This is a week, not a day

Cherokee in one sitting is a mistake. Sleep on the ridge.

  • 02

    October is a queue

The colour is real. So are the cars. Midweek, or pick May.

Three nights on the ridge. Mabry at eight before the coaches. Linn Cove in fog that lifted for ten minutes. That was the drive.

October, Virginia end. The colour is real. So is the queue. I would do it in May and keep October for someone else.
