Going-to-the-Sun Road

West Glacier, MontanaSt. Mary

80 km · Jul – Sep · Moderate

Glacier’s one road across the range. Logan Pass, a wall of meltwater, and a park that still feels like the drawing they made in 1932.

Viewpoints

  • Logan Pass

2,025 m. Hidden Lake is a walk. The goats are not a surprise.

  • Weeping Wall

The mountain leaking on the windscreen. Eastbound you are under it.

  • Lake McDonald

The west end. Still water if you leave before the coaches.

Tips

  • 01

    It opens when it opens

Not June. Often not early July. Check the park page, not last year’s blog.

  • 02

    West to east

The Garden Wall is in front of you. Reservations are the west-side problem.

West Glacier at 6:10 with the reservation. Logan still had a cornice. Weeping Wall hit the roof. St. Mary by eleven, before the coaches turned it into a queue.

The road opened 7 July that year. Anyone who tells you June is lying about a different season. Hidden Lake was still half frozen. Goats on the boardwalk.
