Bandai-Azuma Skyline
Tsuchiyu Pass, Fukushima → Takayu Onsen
29 km · Apr – Nov · Moderate
A volcano wearing a toll road. Azuma-Kofuji sits beside the asphalt like a drawing, then Jōdodaira, then the descent to Takayu. Short. Exact.
Viewpoints
Azuma-Kofuji
The little Fuji. Walk the crater rim if the gate is open.

1,705 m
Jōdodaira
The high rest. Bandai across the bowl on a clear morning.
18 km
1,600 m
- Road
- Toll, seasonal, excellent tarmac. Closes in winter and after volcanic alerts. Fog on the crater rim. The bus to Jōdodaira shares the road.
- Permits
- Toll at the gates. Check the Bandai-Azuma Skyline opening — it shuts for snow and for the mountain.
Tips
- 01
Autumn, not August
The maples on this ridge are the point. Midsummer is haze.
- 02
It closes
Snow and the volcano both shut it. Check the prefecture page the morning you go.

Jōdodaira in a hole of sun. Azuma-Kofuji was smoking a little, which the sign said was normal. Toll paid, maples not yet. Come back in October.

Closed the week before for snow. Opened on a Thursday. The crater walk was ice at the rim. Twenty-nine kilometres. I would not skip the onsen at Takayu.
