Bandai-Azuma Skyline

Tsuchiyu Pass, FukushimaTakayu Onsen

29 km · Apr – Nov · Moderate

A volcano wearing a toll road. Azuma-Kofuji sits beside the asphalt like a drawing, then Jōdodaira, then the descent to Takayu. Short. Exact.

Viewpoints

  • Azuma-Kofuji

The little Fuji. Walk the crater rim if the gate is open.

    12 km

    1,705 m

  • Jōdodaira

The high rest. Bandai across the bowl on a clear morning.

    18 km

    1,600 m

Road
Toll, seasonal, excellent tarmac. Closes in winter and after volcanic alerts. Fog on the crater rim. The bus to Jōdodaira shares the road.
Permits
Toll at the gates. Check the Bandai-Azuma Skyline opening — it shuts for snow and for the mountain.

Tips

  • 01

    Autumn, not August

The maples on this ridge are the point. Midsummer is haze.

  • 02

    It closes

Snow and the volcano both shut it. Check the prefecture page the morning you go.

Jōdodaira in a hole of sun. Azuma-Kofuji was smoking a little, which the sign said was normal. Toll paid, maples not yet. Come back in October.

Closed the week before for snow. Opened on a Thursday. The crater walk was ice at the rim. Twenty-nine kilometres. I would not skip the onsen at Takayu.
